Reading

The fourth grade reading program provides students with a variety of genres and materials ranging from anthology stories, novels, poetry, and articles. The majority of our time will be spent in the anthology, as this is the district approved reading curriculum.  The students will be instructed in constructing meaning from their reading in order to answer explicit and implicit reader response questions.  Students will…

  1. Form a General Understanding
  2. Develop an Interpretation
  3. Make Connections
  4. Examine Content and Structure

In order to construct meaningful short answer responses, students restate the question, answer the question, and add several details from the reading to support their understanding.

Writing

Up until early March, fourth grade students will continue writing both personal and imaginative narratives.  Students are expected to write a well-developed and fully elaborated six-paragraph story.  Students will focus on keeping their time focus, or main event, to no more than 30 minutes.  This will allow students to practice using descriptive details.  After the CMTs, fourth graders will begin writing expository pieces.  I hope to build a strong foundation in this form of writing as they will continue in this genre next year.  Students will continue practicing cursive on their spelling quizzes, personal letters, and final drafts of their writings.

Spelling

The grade four spelling program has several major areas of emphasis: to target the words students use and misspell frequently, to build vocabulary and writing skills, to focus on conventions of spelling and phonics, as well as to make everyone a better speller with differentiated lists.
