*Group and count objects by 10’s
*Compare groups of objects (more, less, same)
Patterns:
*Continue a given pattern (red, blue, red, blue, _____, _____ What comes next?)
*Make a pattern (Use 2 shapes, ask child to make a pattern with them. Ex: Circle, Square, Circle, Square)
*Determine a pattern’s rule (ex: big. little, little)
Sorting:
*Sort objects by a given rule (Ex: Sort these socks by their color – Student should put all red socks together, all blue socks, all white socks etc.)
*Sort objects using more than one characteristic (Can you sort these bears? Student sorts by color. Can you sort them another way? Student sorts by size.)
*Determine a sorting rule (Why did I put all these shapes together? Student replies, “They all have 4 sides.”
Shapes/Geometry:
*Name shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle)
*Name 3-D shapes (ball, cone, cube, cylinder)
*Describe characteristics of 2-D and 3-D shapes (Triangles have 3 straight sides; squares have 4 straight sides with the same length etc.)
*Identify the position of an object (over, under, in, beside etc.)
Measurement:
*Measure objects using non standard units (Ex: The desk is 5 pencils long)
*Order and compare objects by size, length, weight (Which pencil is longer? Which cup is heavier? Put the rocks in order from smallest to largest.)
Time/Calendar Skills
*Order simple events in time (Ex: 1. Get up 2. Have breakfast 3. Go to school)
*Locate a date on the calendar (ex: Can you show me Thursday, October 23?)
*Understand terms yesterday, today, tomorrow
*Understand the purpose of the clock
Addition/Subtraction
*Solve addition and subtraction stories using real objects (Ex: Dad has 3 bears, he just found 2 more. How many bears does he have altogether? Ex: Dad has 5 bears, he lost 2. How many does he have left?)
Graphing
*Collect, organize and display information on a graph
*Interpret the graph using the terms more, less, same, how many more/less? (Ex: Do more friends like chocolate or vanilla ice cream? How many more friends like chocolate than vanilla?)
Fractions
*Identify a whole and half of an object
*Recognize that two halves make a whole
*Share a set of objects into two groups (Ex: I have 10 cookies to share with you. How many cookies will we each get?)
Money
*Identify a penny and a dime
*Count pennies and trade for objects (This pencil costs 15 cents. Can you count 15 pennies?)
Estimation
*Estimate the number of objects in a handful
*Estimate length, area and capacity with everyday objects (How many pencils long do you think the desk is? How many blocks do you think will fit in this shape?)
Ordinal Numbers
*Identify the position of objects using 1st-5th and last (The ducks had a race! Which duck is in 1st place? Third place? Last place?)
