Kindergarten Language Arts Curriculum

By the end of Kindergarten, the students should be able to:
Letters:
*Name the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet in order (A,B,C) and out of order (K,Z,M)
*Recognize and produce the letter sounds
*Print the letters following given models
Word Play:
*Make rhyming words (What is a word that rhymes with cake? bake, make, take etc.)
*Identify and count syllables in words (Can you clap the syllable in the word dinosaur? Di-no-saur)
*Recognize the beginning sound of a word (What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word “sun?” Student should make the “s” sound.)
*Recognize the ending sound of a word (What sound do you hear at the end of the word “cat?” Student should make the “t” sound.)
*Put letter sounds together to make a word (Teacher gives the three sounds b-a-t. Student blends the sounds for the word "bat.")
*Identify individual sounds in words (What sounds do you hear in the word cat? Student gives the three sounds: “c-a-t”)
Book/Print Skills:
*Find the front and back of a book
*Point to the title on the front of the book and locate the title page
*Locate the first page in a story
*Point to the words as s/he is reading a story or while someone else reads the story.
*Read print from left to right and top to bottom
*Point to the first word on the page and the last word on the page.
*Demonstrate understanding of a letter, a word, a sentence (Can you show me a word on the page? A letter? A sentence?)
*Read words from the kindergarten sight word list.
Writing:
*Use some correct beginning and ending sounds when writing words (bs for bus)
*Use some kindergarten sight words in writing (“I s the bs “ for “ I see the bus”)
*Write a complete thought with a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, a punctuation mark at the end (I s the bs.) *Write first and last name with the initial letter capitalized
Comprehension/Vocabulary
*Identify the characters and setting in a story
*Retell main events in a familiar story
*Answer questions about a story
*Use and understand age appropriate vocabulary
Reading Skills
*Read predictable stories from memory and point to words while reading
*Read words from the Kindergarten sight word list
*Use picture clues and initial word sounds to figure out unknown words.
