Classroom Management

Children, and adults, crave attention.  Children would rather have negative attention than no attention at all.  In my experience, the best approach to managing a classroom full of children is to give them positive attention.

Positive Reinforcement

Catch them being good.  Highlight their accomplishments, no matter how small, with genuine praise and enthusiasm.  “Thank you for…  I like how you… I was really impressed when you…”

·       Individual Incentive System: Individuals are given raffle tickets for exhibiting on task behavior, making good choices, helping others, etc.  Later, tickets are collected and are used in the weekly prize box drawing.

·       Large Group Incentive System:  The student, as a whole, are given five “Party Time Points” if everyone is exhibiting on task, and responsible behavior.  Once the students reach 100 points, they have earned themselves a party.

Negative Reinforcement

All classrooms at Eastford Elementary utilize the “Card System” as a tool for behavior management. As each negative behavior arises, students flip a colored card, which represents a consequence.  This system serves as a visual reminder of each child’s poor choices.  As illustrated below, this program has a built in parent component.  All students start on White at the start of each and every day.

Green - First warning is verbal

Yellow - Second warning earns 5 minutes away from the group

Red      - Third warning earns 10 minutes away, a reflection sheet, and a call home

** Fourth warning earns a trip to the principal.

Technology

Students will practice and have knowledge of skills learned in previous grades.

This year students will, among others…

  • Create tables, sort data and label charts
  • Produce PowerPoint presentation
  • Experience cameras, video camera and Smart Board
  • Practice using integrated features of computer system to complete project
  • Name, save, open files to/from server
  • Use apostrophes and quotations with proper spacing
  • Use bulleted and numbered lists
  • Format text

Spanish

Students work with Maestra Hemeon 20 minutes each week on vocabulary; including weather, shapes, and colors.  She uses a full immersion approach which means she only speaks Spanish in the classroom.
