Grading Criteria

"Grading" has been replaced with assessing children's progress using state standards on report cards. The full print-out of Connecticut's Art Standards is on another page under my Instruction area of the school's website. However, below you will see a list of the abbreviated standards as they are presented on our report card format. Grades K, 1 and 2 will reflect the first three standards only. Grades 3 and 4 will reflect the first four standards only. Grades 5-8 will reflect all six standards. The standards will be represented with an E (exceeds expectations), an M (meets expectations), P (progressing towards expectations), or an L, (limited progress towards expectations). There will be two other areas of assessment: "participates in classroom activities," and "demonstrates consistent effort" designated by a numerical achievement scale.

Standard 1: Understand media and processes
Standard 2:  Understands elements and principles
Standard 3: Applies subject matter and ideas
Standard 4: Understands art in relation to history
Standard 5:
Evaluates own and others' art
Standard 6: Connects art to daily life and other subjects

For each separate project in middle school there is a specific rubric that is itself scored according to criteria related to that one project or unit of work. The way the projects are assessed is reflected in the documents under this page as a PDF file.
