Grade 6 Tessa-lizards based on the art of M.C. Escher:
In the picture above, Mr. Escher has created a realistic lizard appearing to climb right out of a flat puzzle of lizard shapes. The puzzle looks like a continuous interlocking pattern. The pattern of lizards is a tessalation. Because the three-dimensionally drawn lizard looks as if it has been hiding in plain view on top of the look-alike pattern, just as a chameleon seems to hide against its background, we call this art project TESSALIZARDS. Grade 6 students are challenged to use color, pattern and texture to make their 3-D pop-up lizards seem to blend into their backgrounds. Wallpaper scraps are the background, and students may use colored pencils, chalk or markers to make their camouflage attempts succeed. Here are some of the great results of the TESSALIZARD challenge!
