Owls in grade 4

This unit started with a reading of Jane Yolen's OWL MOON and a few hooting lessons for everyone. Check out the following website to hear some owl calls:    http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php   If the owl pages web address shown here does not respond as a live link, copy and paste it into your browser window.

After several students compared stories about their experiences with owls, Ms. Muller brought in her Great Horned Owl owl specimen and shared her encounters as a wildlife rehabilitator.

Then, Fourth graders watched Ms. Muller build a clay owl. During the demonstration everyone wrote down the many steps in the process of forming and texturing a clay slab.  Students were eager to write and sketch because they knew that their notes would help them remember how to do the project when it was their turn to use clay. Everyone's notes were posted on a bulletin board during the student's own clay making session so that it was like having an encyclopedia of directions. If someone forgot an important detail, another set of notes would serve as "back up."

Working from bird field guides or other resources, students completed their bisque-fired clay owls with water color paints and chalk pastels to achieve a soft, feathery appearance. You can see that some students glued sticks to their owls' talons for a perch; all of the owls will have twine attached later so the owls can be displayed as wall sculptures.
