Welcome to Third Grade My name is Lori Crocker-Lincoln and I am thrilled to be your child's grade three teacher this year. It is my hope as partners in education we we can stay in close communication throughout the year. Please don't hesitate to contact me. You can e-mail me at lcrockerlincoln@eastfordct.org It is my hope this academic overview of grade three will provide you with some of the curriculum areas covered throughout the year as well as how behavior management is incorporated into the daily program. Reading- The grade three reading program provides students with a variety of genres and materials ranging from anthology stories, poetry, and articles, as well as high quality novels. Students will be instructed in constructing meaning from their reading, developing an interpretation from their reading, as well as taking a critical stance with respect to their reading. Literary devices such as the simile will be explored. Constructing meaningful reader responses including a topic sentence, several details from the reading, as well as a concluding sentence is also highlighted. Writing- Grade three writing focuses on perfecting the narrative technique! Students will be expected to write a well developed, fully elaborated six paragraph story. Click here to view the Narrative Writing Diamond. Another focus of the grade three writing program is editing and revising. Students will create a personal editing and revising notebook as well as engage in several editing and revising games. Conventions of grammar play an integral role in this student notebook. Cursive writing is introduced in grade three! Click here to view our cursive alphabet. Spelling- The grade three spelling program has several major areas of emphasis: to target the words students use and misspell frequently, to build vocabulary and writing skills, to focus on conventions of spelling and phonics, as well as to make everyone a better speller with differentiated lists. Math- This year Mrs. Carole McCombe will be instructing your child in the area of mathematics! Students working on the grade three mathematical skills focus on these main content areas: numerical and proportional reasoning, geometry and measurement, working with data, algebraic reasoning, and integrated understandings. Below is a brief example of some of the specific topics that are highlighted. Numerical & Proportional Reasoning Comparing fractions, identifying equivalent fractions, and adding/subtracting fractions are a few examples. Geometry and Measurement Estimating measurements and selecting the appropriate measurement tool. Working With Data Designing surveys and interpreting them. Algebraic Reasoning Creating and describing geometric patterns. Integrated Understanding Open Ended Word Problems Science- Grade three science is taught by Mrs Mead. Students travel to Mrs. Mead’s classroom for this instruction time. The following areas of study are explored with a hands-on approach: States of Matter Students will explore how matter affects the properties and uses of materials. Plants and Animals Students will earn about the processes responsible for life's unity and diversity. Rocks Students will uncover how materials cycle through the Earth's systems. Earth's Resources How science and technology affect our lives is thr thrust of this topic. Social Studies- Exploring the concept of a community is the major focus of the third grade social studies program. The following are some topics covered: Community and Geography Community Government Economic Choices Celebrating People and Cultures Health- Each week grade three participates in a “Second Step” lesson. The three areas of focus include empathy training, impulse control, and anger management. Students also benefit from a “healthy lifestyles” and nutrition unit with Mrs. Tedisky, the physical education educator. Spanish- Grade three students are exposed to Spanish one time each week for the purpose of learning about the language and culture. This is a non-graded class. Technology- The Eastford Technology Curriculum engages students in a variety of computer skills such as file navigation, keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, multimedia presentations, related vocabulary, and ethical user topics. Classroom Management- Grade three utilizes the “Card System” as a tool for behavior management both in the classroom and in other school destinations throughout the day. As each behavior situation arises, students flip a colored card representing a consequence. As illustrated below, this program has a built in parent component whereby if a difficult behavior day occurs, the parent is contacted at that time by both the child and teacher. *First warning is verbal…………Green Card **Second warning earns 5 minutes away from group……..Yellow Card ***Third warning earns 10 minutes away and a reflection sheet ...Red Card **** Fourth warning earns a call to parent & the card remains on red. ***** Fifth warning earns a trip to the principal with the red card. I do hope this gives you a brief understanding of some of the skills and concepts your third grader will be learning this year. I look forward to an educationally rich year with your child.
